“Clips gives iPhone and iPad users a new way to express themselves through video, and it’s incredibly easy to use,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Apps Product Marketing. “The effects, filters and amazing new Live Titles we’ve designed for Clips let anyone make great-looking, easily sharable videos with just a few taps.”
Apple announced Clips alongside a new Red iPhone 7 and a new iPad with a 9.7-inch display in late March.
What is the Apple Clips App?
The Apple Clips app is a new video app from Apple that helps you make more shareable videos. The app only works on the iPhone and iPad, but it isn’t limited to sharing with other iPhone users.
You can load up videos, photos, and music in the Clips app and it will combine the clips into a shareable video that you can post on social media or send through iMessage.
With the Clips app, you are able to shoot live video, grab video and photos from your camera roll and then edit and combine them without the need to use complicated video editing software. You can add filters, emoji, shapes and customizable text. Once your video and photos are lined up, you can choose from dozens of music tracks that automatically line up to the length of your video clip.
Apple Clips App Release Date
The Apple Clips app release date is in April. Apple did not outline a specific date but does mention that you need to use iOS 10.3 with the new app.
Apple is well into the iOS 10.3 beta process and there are some signs that this update will arrive in March, but this news release suggests that the iOS 10.3 release date is coming in April alongside Clips.
Apple Clips Live Titles
Apple’s big new feature in the Clips app is Live Titles. These are animated captions and titles that you create as you speak. Apple describes the feature,
“Users can add animated captions and titles using just their voice. Captions are generated automatically as a user speaks, and appear on screen perfectly synced with the user’s voice. Users can mix and match different styles, and tap any title to adjust text and punctuation, or even add inline emoji. Live Titles supports 36 different languages.”
You can add comic book filters, speech bubbles, shapes and even full screen animated posters that add to your videos.
Apple designed the Clips app to help you create videos using your photos, your iPhone or iPad camera and music. The company is not limiting where you can share the clips to. In the announcement, Apple specifically mentions that you can share to Facebook, Instagram and through the Messages app. Apple also mentions YouTube and Vimeo.
If you share through the Messages the app can automatically suggest sending to people who appear in the clips and the people you share with most often. Once you have a Clips video in your camera roll you can upload to your Instagram Story or to Snapchat.
Is Apple Clips Free?
The Apple Clips app is free to download
and use on your iPhone and iPad. The app only works on the iPhone 5s and newer and new 9.7-inch iPad, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad mini 2 and later as well as the iPod touch 6th generation. There is no indication that there will be in-app purchases to unlock extra music tracks or Live Titles at this time.
